Transcription: Rice production in the Philippines occurs mainly on the northern island of Luzon. As rice grows better in shallow water, the rice or paddy fields must be flooded. Special dikes are built to retain the waters from the rainy season. After the fields have been dried out by the sun, the rice is harvested and threshed where it is beaten against slatted wood to separate the grain. Hard work and luck with the weather are essential if there is to be a successful harvest. Pressure to raise production is intense as the Philippines has one of the fastest growing populations in the world.
